Guys,
I am just a simple old (67 next birthday) developer who has been in this industry since 1962. I have used almost all the popular languages and IDEs on most major platforms and still use the more common ones.
I ask a couple of questions.
I have tried to update my skills and mindset over the years, why have not you? Development languages, techniques and IDEs have become a religious issue with many people, particularly the anti-Microsoft set which seems to include many of you! (I use OpenSource stuff heavily, as well as Microsoft)
Number one, why are you still using this old email-based system when Ingres has a new forum for OpenROAD users that is directly moderated by Ingres? Many of you have been asking for this for ages but now that it is here, all this turgid discussion over the OpenROAD IDE is not in there and you use a 1990s system for communication (sorry Paul)!
I do not like OpenROAD very much any more in contrast to its competitors. It used to be ahead of its time but I feel that it is rapidly falling by the wayside because its major practioners remain in the 20th century. Ingres IS advancing - its .NET V2 interface is great, its ECLIPSE integration is very good for a first implementation. Its involvement with BEA, Novell etc is promising. It is only OpenROAD that seems to be behind and I suspect that is only because the community is also behind the times!
I won't continue the rant here, as I think the whole thing is more appropriately discussed in the Ingres OpenROAD Users' forum, which is at least using modern technology to help us developers.
Rant over
