It seems that as soon as I sent out the question, I fixed it. Ingres
report writer does it for me.
If I dont declare the field .

    text_value (c1786)
*/
The above code was removed and it all works fine.

String objects stored by OpenROAD in the database have newlines like
this: 
testing one two\nthree 

When displaying the text in ingres report writer , I need to process
them somehow. Otherwise it truncates at the \n if I simply select the
text_value into a character field.
